Green Roof Plant Trials: more plants on gazebo testing facility In May
(two years after the original planting of the NATS gazebo), the east
side was planted with new candidate species. Some of the species will
be studied on BCIT's Elevated Research Platform (ERP), scheduled to be
installed in September. The other species are natives that are new to
the nursery such as: Androsace septentrionalis, Aster alpigenus, Carex
inops, Erigeron peregrinus, Penstemon convertus, Poa secunda, and
Saxifraga bronchialis.

A colourful roofscape of red-tinged Sedums, blue-flowering Lithadora
diffusa ‘Grace Ward' and the yellow Genista pilosa. Currently, the
Penstemons and Eriophyllums are looking fantastic. They have really
impressed us with their perfomance.
Background: NATS On-Site Green Roof Gazebo In
spring 2005, a gazebo was erected in the north-west corner of NATS
Nursery in order to study plant performance in situ. The four sides of
the gazebo are planted with different combinations of plants, in 3"
green roof growing media. This structure permits the observation of
plant performance and survivability, and allows us to trial new
species in the extreme conditions often occuring on rooftops.
