Invasive Plant Q & A
(Taken from the Greater Vancouver Invasive Plant Council)

Q -What is an invasive plant?
A - A plant species that is not native to our region, grows rapidly, spreads quickly and widely and can grow just about anywhere

Q - Why are invasive plants a problem?
A - they outcompete and displace native plants that wildlife depends on
- they can alter water flow, leading to erosion and less available water
- some create an increased fire hazard
- some contain substances that are toxic to people and animals

Q- How are invasive plants spread?
A - improper disposal of garden waste into parks and natural areas
- unintentional dispersal through growth
- unintentional dispersal through seed
- intentional introduction as garden ornamentals

Q- How do I prevent the spread of invasives?
A- don't dump, place invasives into the garbage
- keep fast growers under control through cutting or replace with natives
- deadhead flowers and seed pods, cut berries to reduce reproduction
- choose plants wisely, avoid "fast spreaders" or "vigorous self-seeders"
